When you are questioning students, tell them you will give them 2 minutes to think about their answers and write their thoughts down, before you ask everyone to contribute. This will increase the quality of student answer, increase participation and avoids the same students dominating Q&A in class. It also avoids the potentially awkward 'wait' which sometimes leads to tutors answering the question themselves or scaffolding it too soon!
